The Golden Age of Posters Seen in the Tobacco and Salt Museum Collection

December 14, 2019 – February 16, 2020

The Tobacco and Salt Museum holds large collections of posters such as tobacco advertisements, etc., from Japan and abroad. And among these, works acquired from the Toyo Printing Factory established in Kyoto in 1899 by Kichibei Murai, the Meiji king of tobacco, and later the Kyoto Printing Factory for the Ministry of Finance's Monopoly Bureau, include photos that show the original paintings and printing processes for posters, etc., from the age of lithographic printing. This exhibition offers an overview of these lingering reminders of the early days of commercial printing in Japan.

Taken from the museum's poster collections, this exhibition primarily features posters produced from the 1890s to 1960s, works which were advertising stars at the time, and introduces changes to graphic design in Japan. The exhibition also includes works such as tobacco posters from overseas, etc., from famous designers such as Savignac and others.
